Our Last Christmas, The Christmas of 1997

by Katie Stewart

My Dearest Daughter,

This is the last Christmas we will have together, this side of Heaven (the LORD helping us), and I wanted to take advantage of this last "card-sharing" opportunity. It's usually only on birthdays and Christmas that I get a chance to "get mushy" legitimately. And I think it's more a mother's prerogative than it is for anyone else.

I tried to think of a few concepts that reminded me most of the kind of person you are. You are so many wonderful things to me, that this was very difficult to limit to a few-- but here's my best effort.

Sweetness

"O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely" (Song of Solomon 2:14).

You are my first
"dove," [firstborn child] and my desire for you, is that your sweet voice and face hide with me in the secret places of our Rock.

"...the anointing oil, and sweet incense for the holy place..." (Exodus 31:11).
"...the pure incense of sweet spices..." (Exodus 37:29).
You are the sweetness in our lives.

"We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company" (Psalm 55:14).
I enjoy our sweet fellowship.

"How sweet are Thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" (Psalm 119:103).
"Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones" (Proverbs 16:24).
Your sweetness comes from within-- where He abides.

"My meditation of Him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD"
(Psalm 104:34).
You are like Him, because the sweet thought of you makes me glad, too.

"...thy sleep shall be sweet..." (Proverbs 3:24).
"...my sleep was sweet unto me..." (Jeremiah 31:26).
His sweetness marinates you, all over, as you sleep.

"...the sweet psalmist of Israel..." (2Samuel 23:1).
From the abundance of your heart, you are the melody we hear. You are a Sweetheart to me.

"But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received... the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God" (Philippians 4:18).
A mother couldn't be blessed with a more "giving" daughter than you are. I am increased with good things because of your thoughtfulness.

Your Dad, and I, appreciate all the beautiful touches you add to our lives. This brings me to the second concept that you remind me most of:

A Doer of Good Works

"...this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did..." (Acts 9:36).
You seem just "full of" helpful ideas for us all. The LORD fills your heart.

"For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10).
You are a credit to His workmanship.

"But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works" (1Timothy 2:10).
I have never known a more godly woman than you. You are the woman I wish I was. Without meaning to, you put me to shame-- at the same time, you encourage me to follow.

"In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works" (Titus 2:7).
"That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate" (1Timothy 6:18).
Dear Daughter, that is a description of you-- from Him.

Your willingness is beautiful.

"Who gave Himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works" (Titus 2:14).
What delights my heart, is knowing that you are a purified, peculiar, zealot because He gave Himself that you would be so.

"This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men" (Titus 3:8).
Your carefulness benefits us all.

"...learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful" (Titus 3:14).
You do a good job of maintaining, which makes you very useful to Him, and us. I am so grateful He gave you to us.

"And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works" (Hebrews 10:24).
Your actions please God. And because you love Him, you love us. Thank you, sweet Daughter! You have given me the thoroughly enjoyable experience of "mothering" the perfect daughter. I will remember this forever.

Your Providentially-blessed Mother
