Who is Marietta Davis?
Or, God Allowed Us to Look Over Marietta's Shoulder

by Tom Stewart

Marietta Davis: A Coma in 1848

Unable to be aroused by doctors for nine days, the 25 year old Baptist woman finally awoke from her coma with this amazingly detailed dream. Her dreams were recorded in a book as the "Visions of Marietta Davis". In keeping with the prophecies of Joel, Marietta dreamed dreams and saw visions.
"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out My Spirit" (Joel 2:28-29).

No particular cult, group, or following was spawned by her unusual dreams, indicating that Marietta Davis had no other motive than to build the Church of the LORD Jesus Christ.
"From Whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the Effectual Working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love" (Ephesians 4:16).

The cross of the LORD Jesus Christ is central to Marietta's dreams, as it is to the message of Christianity.
"Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His Cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, He [Jesus Christ] made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it" (Colossians 2:14-15).

She underscored the singular divinity of Jesus in her visions, something that the End Time Antichrist will usurp for himself.
"And without controversy great is the mystery of Godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of Angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory" (1Timothy 3:16).

An indicator that Marietta's dreams came from her LORD and not from herself was that her dreams stressed the need for repentance from sin and faith in God.
"The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the Gospel" (Mark 1:15).

Marietta's Dreams

A
nyone reading Marietta's dreams will come to the keen realization that Heaven is more than a figment of theological folklore. As Jesus told the thief on the cross,
"Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with Me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43). Heaven was and is real to Jesus. Heaven would hold very little attraction, if it was not the eternal dwelling of the righteous; as opposed to Hell, being the eternal prison of the wicked. "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell" (Matthew 10:28). Nothing that is sinful or defiled will enter into Heaven. "And there shall in no wise enter into It any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's Book of Life" (Revelation 21:27).

Those who read Marietta Davis' visions will note that she makes noticeable use of the Scriptures. After all, the Scriptures are the Word of God.
"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every WORD that proceedeth out of the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). Confidence in the Word of God is the hallmark of the Saints of God throughout the ages. "For what saith the Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness" (Romans 4:3).

It would be difficult to imagine Heaven as a place for anything but holiness; yet, holiness is necessary to even enter that Blessed Place.
"Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the LORD" (Hebrews 12:14). How does a mortal man come by this holiness? Only by God's forgiveness, can man be without sin. "Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD will not impute sin" (Romans 4:7-8). God forgives when we humbly confess our sins. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1John 1:9).

In Heaven

M
arietta Davis is most certainly in Heaven now, thrilling to the beautiful and majestic strains of the Heavenly anthems.
"But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him" (1Corinthians 2:9). Our unspeakable joy in Heaven will find its way into loud praise of our LORD Jesus Christ. "Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing" (Revelation 5:12).
