The Tribulation:
The Seventieth Week of Daniel

A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE FROM THE RESOURCES OF WStS
Compiled by Katie Stewart

DEFINITION OF "The Tribulation": the time in which God completes the Judgment of the World. Also known as "The Seventieth Week of Daniel" (Daniel 9:24-27). The Tribulation Week is a composite name derived from the term "weeks" from the Daniel 9 prophecy, and from the term "great tribulation" from Jesus' Matthew 24 Olivet Discourse. Please see our "Tribulation Timeline Big Chart" ---New Window for a visual depicting these events.

The bold black type below indicates the theme discussed in the corresponding link. The link takes you directly to the location within the PFYI article.

PFYI article: The Seventy Weeks of Daniel by Tom Stewart

  1. "Seventy weeks are determined upon Thy people and upon Thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in Everlasting Righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy" (Daniel 9:24). Daniel's Seventieth Week (Daniel 9:27)-- known also as the Tribulation Week-- is the present focus of prophetic interest, because it still remains to be fulfilled. However, The Ancient of Days (7:9) has wisely outlined a much broader program of Seventy Weeks. Read More About It: The Seventy Weeks of Daniel ---New Window

  2. Contrary to the belief of the lost sinner-- and backslidden professing Christian-- all sin must be judged. "Every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward" (Hebrews 2:2) in the past. Since God has not changed-- "I am the LORD, I change not" (Malachi 3:6)-- He will still judge all sin. "For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged" (1Corinthians 11:31). God hates sin, so there will be a Tribulation Week. Read More About It: The Seventy Weeks of Daniel ---New Window

  3. It is entirely proper to view the Seventy Weeks (Daniel 9:24) as representative of a period greater than 490 days. "After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know My breach of Promise" (Numbers 14:34). Read More About It: The Seventy Weeks of Daniel ---New Window

  4. In his book The Coming Prince ---New Window (1895), Sir Robert Anderson carefully outlined the position that the Seventy Weeks could be taken as: (1) 69 weeks: adding together "seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks" (Daniel 9:25), plus (2) a disconnected and final 70th week, i.e., separated from the end of the 69th Week (April 6th 32 AD) by approximately 1,966 years until the beginning of the 70th Week (1998 AD): "he [the Antichrist] shall confirm the Covenant with many for one week [the 70th week]" (9:27). Read More About It: The Seventy Weeks of Daniel ---New Window

  5. John Gill's Expositor (1760) commented on Daniel 9:25-- "Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times" (Daniel 9:25)-- in agreement with Sir Robert Anderson. Incidentally, Gill did briefly state another position on the Seventy Weeks taken from Sir Isaac Newton's Observations on Daniel. Read More About It: The Seventy Weeks of Daniel ---New Window

  6. The Seventy Weeks of Daniel prophecy (Daniel 9:24-27) concerns the Jews, i.e., Daniel's "people" (9:24). Read More About It: The Seventy Weeks of Daniel ---New Window

  7. Gabriel's delivery of this prophecy concerning the Jews and Jerusalem (Daniel 9:24-27) demonstrates how a deficiency of understanding of Old Testament prophecies has crippled modern Christianity's appreciation of this Time of the End (12:4). 8. When He whose "name is called The Word of God" (Revelation 19:13) appears at His Second Coming to "smite the nations" (19:15), then Everlasting Righteousness will be brought in. Read More About It: The Seventy Weeks of Daniel ---New Window

  9. Why would the LORD go through all the trouble of revealing His prophetic program to Daniel, only to tell Daniel to "shut up the words, and seal the book"? It appears that the LORD will divulge His battle plans only on a "need-to-know" basis. Read More About It: The Seventy Weeks of Daniel ---New Window

  10. That "fullness" (Romans 11:12) will come in a single day. "Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children" (Isaiah 66:8). Along with converted Israel will come the converted Gentiles to physically populate the world under the dominion of the King Of Kings, and LORD Of Lords. PFYI article: 1998: Year of the Apocalypse (Part 2) by Tom Stewart

  1. As we approach the Seventieth Week of Daniel, it would greatly aid the faith of those who are watching and waiting, as the Wise Virgins of Matthew 25, to see how the LORD told Ezekiel to record a prophecy in 593 BC that would mathematically bring us to the 1967 Israeli recapture of Jerusalem during the Six Day War. Read More About It: 1998: Year of the Apocalypse (Part 2) ---New Window

  2. In essence, disobedience would be punished by allowing Israel's enemies to consume them (Leviticus 26:14-16). Jehovah promised that He would set His face against them (26:17). They would be in Servitude to Israel's enemies. "They that hate you shall reign over you" (26:17). But, God solemnly warns what He will do if that Servitude does not reform them. "And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins" (Leviticus 26:18). A sevenfold judgment would be pronounced. 3. Ezekiel's 430 Day prophecy mathematically brings us to the May 14, 1948 rebirth of the nation of Israel and to the June 7, 1967 recapture of Jerusalem. Nothing can be more definitive than the words of our LORD: "Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled" (Luke 21:32). Again, we are the Terminal Generation. 1. the doors of Jesus' statement in the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24:33) refer to the Two Raptures. The "all these things" (Matthew 24:33,34) refers to the events preceding the Two Raptures, but more specifically to the 2nd and final Pre-Wrath Rapture of the Tribulation Saints. Therefore, the words of the LORD Jesus, "Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled" (Matthew 24:34), tell us that the Terminal Generation ends at the Pre-Wrath Rapture (or, the Second "Come Up Hither"). 2. Though mere existence for the sake of existence is not the goal of the Saints, the fact that God maintains His people on this planet during the troublesome times of the Tribulation Week (Daniel 9:24-27) is a glory to God and a vexation to the Antichrist. 2. It has been common for students of Bible Prophecy to refer to the final manifestation of religion in the End Times as the One World Church; however, it appears more appropriate that this entity will encompass more than an Ecumenical Church after the Christian tradition, but will be comprised of all religions throughout the world. The Holy Spirit described a Global Religion of this sort in the Revelation. "11 And I beheld another beast [the False Prophet] coming up out of the Earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast [the Antichrist] before him, and causeth the Earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast [the Antichrist], whose deadly wound was healed" (Revelation 13:11-12). Though promoters of this sort of Global Religion may prefer to think of it more as the totality of all religions united, i.e., a United Religions (UR); still, the intermingling of all religions results in a Global Religion. 3. Future of Babylon the Great: She Shall Be Utterly Burned With Fire... In the Book of Revelation, we find a description of Babylon the Great (17:1-18), her final destruction (18:1-24), and the rejoicing in Heaven at the judgment of the Great Whore (19:1-4). Though some prefer to interpret Revelation 17 as the destruction of religious Babylon and Revelation 18 as the destruction of a separate economic Babylon, I believe that both describe the destruction of Babylon the Great from the religious, then the economic point of view. It will be quite revealing to see the economic connection that the Great Whore has developed over the years. "And the woman [Babylon the Great] was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication" (Revelation 17:4). "Rapture" is taken from an obsolete French word, which means "abduction" or "to carry off". PFYI article: The Coming Prince by Sir Robert Anderson

  1. TO living men no time can be so solemn as "the living present," whatever its characteristics; and that solemnity is immensely deepened in an age of progress unparalleled in the history of the world. But the question arises whether these days of ours are momentous beyond comparison, by reason of their being in the strictest sense the last? Is the world's history about to close? The sands of its destiny, are they almost run out, and is the crash of all things near at hand? Earnest thinkers will not allow the wild utterances of alarmists, or the vagaries of prophecy-mongers, to divert them from an inquiry at once so solemn and so reasonable. It is only the infidel who doubts that there is a destined limit to the course of "this present evil world"... The only inquiry, therefore, which concerns us relates to the nature of the crisis and the time of its fulfillment. And the key to this inquiry is the Prophet Daniel's vision of the seventy weeks. Not that a right understanding of the prophecy will enable us to prophesy. That is not the purpose for which it was given... No words ought to be necessary to enforce the importance of the subject, and yet the neglect of the prophetic Scriptures, by those even who profess to believe all Scripture to be inspired, is proverbial. Putting the matter on the lowest ground, it might be urged that if a knowledge of the past be important, a knowledge of the future must be of far higher value still, in enlarging the mind and raising it above the littlenesses produced by a narrow and unenlightened contemplation of the present. If God has vouchsafed a revelation to men, the study of it is surely fitted to excite enthusiastic interest, and to command the exercise of every talent which can be brought to bear upon it. Read More About It: The Coming Prince ---New Window

  2. The twenty-fourth chapter of Matthew has been well described as "the anchor of apocalyptic interpretation," and "the touchstone of apocalyptic systems." The fifteenth verse specifies an event and fixes an epoch, by which we are enabled to connect the words of the Lord with the visions of St. John, and both with the prophecies of Daniel. The entire passage is obviously prophetic, and its fulfillment clearly pertains to the time of the end. The fullest and most definite application of the words must therefore be to those who are to witness their accomplishment. To them it is that the warning is specially addressed, against being deceived through a false hope of the immediate return of Christ. A series of terrible events are yet to come; but "these are the beginning of sorrows;" "the end is not yet." How long these "sorrows" shall continue is not revealed. The first sure sign that the end is near will be the advent of the fiercest trial that the redeemed on earth have ever known. The fulfillment of Daniel's vision of the defilement of the Holy Place is to be the signal for immediate flight; "for then shall be the great tribulation," (Vers. 15-21. Compare Daniel 11:1.) unparalleled even in Judah's history. But, as already noticed, this last great persecution belongs to the latter half of Daniel's seventieth week, and therefore it affords a landmark by which we can determine the character and fix the order of the chief events which mark the closing scenes foretold in prophecy. With the clew thus obtained from the Gospel of St. Matthew, we can turn with confidence to study the Apocalyptic visions of St. John. But first it must be clearly recognized that in the twenty-fourth of Matthew, as in the book of Daniel, Jerusalem is the center of the scene to which the prophecy relates; and this of necessity implies that the Jews shall have been restored to Palestine before the time of its fulfillment. 1. The significance of Sir Robert Anderson's book, "The Coming Prince" (1895), should not be underestimated by modern students of Bible prophecy, in that Anderson not only ably defended Daniel's authorship of the Book of Daniel from the "scholarship" of unbelief of the Higher Criticism of his day, but he clearly established the historical accuracy of the fulfillment of the time oriented prophecy for the First Advent of the LORD Jesus Christ.
