The Death of Selfishness |
Tom Stewart |
9-12-03 |
"Since obedience to God is the unselfishness of Love, then selfishness dies the moment we choose to obey. 'He that hath My Commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him' (John 14:21). On the other hand, we resurrect selfishness, when we choose to disobey. 'The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways' (Proverbs 14:14). We must then continually entrust the LORD as the Keeper of Our Soul to deliver us from sin and sinning. 'O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in Thee' (Psalm 25:20)." |

The Emmaus Road - story |
Leewin B. Williams |
(1946) |
It was late in the afternoon of the first Easter day. Two disciples, restless with sorrow, went out by the western gate to walk to the village of Emmaus, some six miles distant. No doubt life and light throbbed in the soft wind, in the gentle scenery. Perhaps the birds were still singing as the sun was slowly sinking over the western hills. All nature must have been glad. But the hearts of these disciples were as heavy as the clods of the grave. Their Lord was dead! |

The Essence of Evil |
Tom Stewart |
9-23-02 |
"The fool hath said in his heart, There is no
God" (Psalm 14:1; 53:1). "There is none good but One, that is, God" (Matthew 19:17). "Both good and evil are mutually exclusive moral choices that demonstrate the heart and character of the Moral Agent. "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh" (Luke 6:45). From Scripture, evil is morally the opposite choice of good, i.e., "refuse the evil, and choose the good" (Isaiah 7:15, 16). And, we have been assured by the LORD Jesus Christ, "There is none good but One, that is, God" (Matthew 19:17). God is the sole personification and definition of good, but what then is evil? The essence of evil is the heart asserting, "No God" (Psalm 14:1)." |

The First Thanksgiving
(1621) |
Tom Stewart |
10-28-02 |
"Since 1863, Americans have celebrated Thanksgiving-- now observed every fourth Thursday of November-- as a national holiday to give thanks for blessings received during the year. As an American tradition, we remember the first Thanksgiving as the gathering of the Pilgrim Fathers in Plymouth, Massachusetts celebrating the success of their Fall Harvest in 1621. And, the familiar Thanksgiving hymn, 'Come, Ye Thankful People, Come,' reminds True Christians of what the Pilgrims certainly knew, that it is God to whom we are to be thankful and that His safe and timely provision occasions our thankfulness. 'In every thing give thanks: for this is the Will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you' (1Thessalonians 5:18). The Providence of the Pilgrims' deliverance in their newfound land of religious freedom-- from their opportune meeting with the English speaking Samoset and Squanto to their learning of the Indian practice of using fish to fertilize their crops-- demonstrated the providential superintendence of the Almighty that made possible their survival and the bounty of their harvest celebration. 'O give thanks unto the LORD; for He is good; for His mercy endureth for ever' (1Chronicles 16:34). Years later, Dean Alford of the Church of England gave the Church a much remembered voice for its gratitude to the 'LORD of the Harvest' (Mark 9:38) through the hymn, 'Come, Ye Thankful People, Come.' Henry Alford (1810-1871), dean of Canterbury Cathedral, is known to theological students and ministers for his exegetical and critical commentary of 'The Greek New Testament' (Volume 1, 1844), but especially the Thanksgiving hymn, 'Come, Ye Thankful People, Come,' has endeared his name to Christians, since its first publication in his 'Psalms and Hymns' (1844). 'I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving' (Psalm 69:30)." |

The Future Punishment of the Wicked Unavoidable and Intolerable - sermon |
Jonathan Edwards |
(1703-1758) |
EZEKIEL 22:14 "Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the Lord save spoken it, and will do it." IN the former part of this chapter, we have a dreadful catalogue of the sins of Jerusalem; as you may see from the first to the thirteenth verse. |

The Glory and Majesty
of Christmas |
Tom Stewart |
12-1-2002 |
"In the two millennia since His birth, the luster of the story of the birth of Jesus Christ has lost none of its fascination for those who have glimpsed its significance. 'For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour, which is Christ the LORD' (Luke 2:11). Whatever secular history or ecclesiastical tradition has made of Christmas, Christmas is the birth of Jesus Christ, God's Greatest Gift to Humanity. 'For God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life' (John 3:16). The centrality of the theme of God manifesting His Son in human flesh to save us from ourselves and sin will never be forgotten by those who have submitted themselves to the Love of God. 'And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His Name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins' (Matthew 1:21). Why but Love would the Divine Father offer His Only Begotten Son to rebellious and sinful man? And, why but Divine Wisdom would God Only Wise see the necessity for His Beloved Son to actually become human flesh to redeem humanity and demonstrate the ability of Believing Man to live 'holy, acceptable unto God' (Romans 12:1). '3 For what the Law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His Own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 that the righteousness of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit' (8:3-4)." |

The Harvest of
Christopher Cushing |
Judith Bronte |
12-13-99 |
"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever
a man soweth, that shall he also reap" (Galatians 6:7). "When Jose Fernandez, a reporter for America Weekly, receives an anonymous phone call, exposing the corruption of 'ClearFieldz, Inc.', a commercial company who's responsibility it is to clear away anti-personnel land mines, Jose unearths more than he bargained for. Why is Rebecca, the secretary of Christopher Cushing, on the run? Will Jose be able to save her? Corruption and scandal totter in the balance of, 'The Harvest of Christopher Cushing'." |

"The Heart of the Gospel" |
Arthur T. Pierson |
(1837-1911) |
"THERE is one text in the New Testament that has been preached from oftener than any other in the Bible. It has been the foundation of great revivals of religion, like that among the Tahitians; or that among the Telugus in India, where 2,222 people were baptized in one day, nearly 5,000 people in thirty days, and 10,000 people within ten months; and where, even during the year drawing to its close, nearly 10,000 more souls have been baptized. It is a wonderful text. Luther called it one of "the little gospels." It is this (John 3:16): "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life." You will naturally wonder what there is in that old text that is new. I have found something that was very new to me, and which also may be to you. I suppose that I had read that verse tens of thousands of times, and yet, a little while ago, as I was led to preach upon that text, I sought of the Lord a clearer view of it, that I might glorify Him, by bringing forth out of His treasure things new and old. After reading these familiar words over, perhaps a hundred times, prayerfully asking for new light and insight, there suddenly came to me this absolutely new discovery, as though one, looking up into the heavens, should see a cloud swept away from before the stars, and a new constellation revealed." --A. T. Pierson 58 |
